ImageMagick Sharpen Resized Images

By default WordPress when it is resizing images, it optimizes images so they would load as fast as possible, without sacrificing image quality that much.

However, the way it does that is by softening images, so they are not as sharp as originals. Usually, it is good enough result for most of the web users, but not for Photographers – they need something special 🙂

This is where ImageMagick Sharpen Resized Images plugin comes. Please see these 2 images, and see the difference by yourself – for most photographers the difference is big.

How to use ImageMagick Sharpen Resized Images

First, you need to install this plugin in your WordPress and activate it. Look for ImageMagick Sharpen Resized Images.

The plugin was not updated in over 2 years(as of April 2019) but it still works great, and shouldn’t produce any issues for now.

Because images will not be regenerated automatically, we will have to force WordPress to do it. Only then you will be able to see the difference in resized images.

How to regenerate resized images

Depending on situation images can be generated in a few ways. Here I will explain which method you should use for which images:

  • Images in Posts, Pages content – for those images please use a plugin like Regenerate Thumbnails and follow its instructions.
  • Images that represent Albums(Albums list page), Works(Works list page), Bricks Albums, Bricks Works,  Posts on the Blog page – for this you will need to remove images located in wp-content\uploads\apollo13_images. Images will be regenerated on the next page refresh.
  • Images inserted in Elementor – for this you will need to remove images located in wp-content\uploads\elementor\thumbs. Images will be regenerated on the next page refresh.
